Cycling

Paul joined the Retford and District Wheelers about 3 years ago. I do not know whether he knew any one in the club before he joined, but he quickly made friends — becoming well liked, and popular with all his fellow club mates. It was not long before he became competitive and I have enjoyed many a "burn up"; with Paul in the middle of the protagonists. He soon recorded a 25 mph plus 10 mile time trial and had taken a liking to track racing. He was lying in 5th place at the Forest Town Track League when he was involved in such a tragic accident. I recall giving him a lift when he suffered a "mechanical" less than a mile from the finish in last years club 5 mile time trial, he was quite sanguine about his bad luck; I believe he would have been the fastest rider that morning — but it was not to be. I will always remember Paul for his interest in cycles and racing of yesteryear, he would often ask questions in a respectful way, about training methods and the equipment we old boys used — in fact his interest in retro cycling was quite unusual for the youth of to-day and I found this quite pleasing. I also recall at last years club AGM, he stepped into the breach to act as minutes secretary for the club committee meetings — a task others were reluctant to do. He did a good job with this challenge and the club were extremely grateful for his contribution in this respect. Paul Johnson was a super young man, always polite and could be relied upon, he was a credit to his parents and family, and was obviously much loved by Charlotte. I will always have an enduring memory of him and Charlotte enjoying themselves at last year's club dinner. He will be/is sorely missed by all his club mates in the Retford and District Wheelers. Tony Siveter 25.10.10 From Ollie Lord - Paul is remembered & really missed. I knew him through the Wheelers - I took him to his first time trial at Carburton; he cycled to mine & we stuck the bikes in the boot! I remember it like yesterday. Since losing Paul I've not really done a great deal of cycling - My heart just hasn't been in it in the same way. We used to have a lot of fun, chatting and... then... suddenly sprinting for a village sign when the other was distracted! We caught each other off guard about 50 / 50 - but he was a faster cyclist than me - so I only ever used to win through deceit & cunning! Anyway, I pass out Clayworth way regularly, and always spare a thought for Paul.
